A city with a flamenco year

The Jerez tourist office describes a calendar that runs from the opening of the Festival de Jerez at the start of the year to the flamenco echoes of traditional carols in December. In between sit a summer season of flamenco events and the autumn celebration of flamenco's UNESCO listing. The calendar below sticks to events the tourist office or the festival itself names, with dates that you should check closer to your trip.

The Festival de Jerez is a dance-led flamenco festival that opens the city's year. It runs around the end of February and the start of March, with performances around the city and a programme of courses alongside them. The festival's own site publishes the programme and the dates. If you are visiting in that window, book accommodation early and look at the festival's schedule alongside your tablao show.

Flamenco Fridays: July and August

Flamenco Fridays is a cycle of concerts by well-known flamenco performers that Jerez stages each year during July and August. The tourist office places it, together with another fiesta of the season, among the most relevant flamenco events of the summer months. The concerts take place in a privileged enclave of the city, so check the programme for the venue.

International Flamenco Day: 16 November

UNESCO inscribed flamenco on its Representative List on 16 November 2010, and that date has become International Flamenco Day. Jerez marks it every year with a programme of events, the tourist office says. If you are in the city on or near the date, the programme is worth checking, and a tablao show makes a good complement to whatever the city has organised.

The Christmas zambomba

The tablao's own site describes the Zambomba Jerezana as a Christmas tradition in Jerez that blends flamenco with traditional carols, and the tourist office likewise marks the end of the year with the flamenco echoes of regional villancicos. A zambomba night is a separate seasonal event from the regular show ticket, so check what a date includes before you book.

What the festival says about itself

The festival's own site presents it as a place where artists and public meet to share a love of flamenco dance and Spanish dance, and as a space for learning that invites people not only to watch but to take part. The programme includes courses alongside the performances. If you are tempted by a class, check the course programme on the festival site.

Peñas and the study of flamenco

Beyond the calendar, the tourist office lists the peñas flamencas as places where the public can hear the best flamenco in Jerez, and the Andalusian Flamenco Centre in the Pemartín Palace as an essential visit for anyone who wants to understand the art. It houses the Chair of Flamencology and Andalusian Folkloric Studies. Check opening times and any changes before you go, since arrangements can change.

Where to look for dates

Three sites cover most of what you will want. The Jerez tourism site lists flamenco events, peñas, tablaos and thematic centres, with its own page for each summer event. The Festival de Jerez publishes its dates and its programme of courses. The tablao's own site lists its regular shows and its seasonal offers. Check all three a few weeks before you travel, because programmes are confirmed late, and treat any date in this guide as a pointer to where to look, not a promise.

Where a tablao show fits

A tablao show is the one flamenco event you can plan for any week of the year. It does not depend on a festival date, a neighbourhood fiesta or an invitation to a club. That makes it the reliable core of a visit, with festivals, peñas and tabancos layered on top when the dates line up with your trip.

Planning around the dates

Because Jerez has big flamenco weeks, hotels and shows can be busier in them. Book your tablao date as soon as your trip is fixed, and use the booking calendar to see which dates and times are on sale. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead through GetYourGuide makes it easy to hold a date while you finalise travel.
